tanks that store fuel oil to provide heating for single and
multi-family dwellings where they
are located. Most have 275 gallons of oil when they are full. Businesses may
have even bigger tanks. Like most people, you probably never give your tank a
thought, probably far less even than making sure annual maintenance is
performed on your burner and boiler. That's a mistake. Leaking, rusted or ruptured oil tanks are a serious threat to you, your family, your business, public safety, the water supply and the environment. A good tank can last 30-40 years depending on where it is located in your dwelling or business. If it is in your cellar above ground, as long as your cellar is a dry one, it is apt to last longer than one which is actually buried under-ground or located outside. Tanks can collapse when the legs rust or the soil settles due to the freezing or thawing cycle. Remember a 275 gallon tank, when full, weighs, over one ton! It is very important to note whether your tank is rusting, corroded or bulging in the wrong place. If you see holes or leaks, call for help immediately. If a leak gets into the so il under your house or business or
into a stream or the ground water or the local water supply, the cleanup for
the contamination is extremely expensive and you are responsible for it under
state and federal laws. You are also endangering your family or customers from
potential vapors as well as potentially injuring your connections to your other
utilities. So if your oil consumption jumps very suddenly (more than it usually
does in cold weather) make sure that you take a look at the tank to see if you
have a leak. Sometimes neighbors can smell the leak from next door. Your tank
might not be leaking but your fill pipe from the street to the tank might be.
Many people buy systems to attach to the pipe to warn them if any leak occurs.
That's a good investment for a reasonable price. We can help you with those.
So let's say you've found a leak, then what? Do not attempt
to stop it or clean it up yourself. Do not attempt to replace the old tank with
a new one by yourself. To do either of these things is against state and
federal laws. Only people who are licensed professionals are allowed to clean
up spills and to replace tanks. In fact, you are required to notify your
Department of Environmental Protection if you have a leak and then whoever you
hire to help you has to present them with a cleanup and/or tank replacement
plan. The minute you see a leak, con- tact us. If you wait, your cleanup costs
could skyrocket. Many homeowners' insurance policies offer some or complete
protection in the occasion of such problems. However, if you don't notify them,
they could hold you responsible for negligence. We can assist you with the right people for cleanup and we can replace your old tank if that is necessary. We are tank professionals.
