WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?

A heat pump is a device that, simply put, will take heat from one location to another. Typically, a heat pump will pull heat out of the air and transfer it to a building or a room which results in the inner area being heated. A heat pump can also work in reverse to pull heat out of a room or building and vent it to the outside which results in the inside area being cooled.

In a typical heat pump, a fan in an outside unit is used to move air over a set of coils filled with a refrigerant. The refrigerant in the coils absorbs the heat and transfers it into the house where another fan will “blow” the heat out of the coils and distribute it into the room. The cooled refrigerant then circulates back to the outside unit where the cycle repeats itself.

In the past, heat pumps have been somewhat limited in colder climates since the efficiency of moving heat from a relatively cold outdoor area was not cost effective. However recent technological advances have made heat pumps much more efficient. These newer heat pumps use direct current to reduce energy costs and can meet 100% of their rated heating capacities at temperatures as low as 5º F!
